the house. abc's john muller is here with the latest. john? >> reporter: ron, the amber alert, the children thought to have died in that horrible fire are alive. it took almost a week for this amber alert. but repeated searches for the children or their remains have turned up nothing. overnight, tennessee officials putting out a statewide amber alert. 9-year-old chloie leverette, and gage daniel. it's been six days since a fire torched the home with their step-grandparents. initially it was thought that the children and the grandparents died in the flames. but after six days of exhaustive searching inside the rubble, there's only physical evidence of the grandparent, not the children. >> if we just had ashes, you know, or the bodies. but we don't have anything. >> reporter: the amber alert reads, the location of chloie and gage is unknown. authorities have no reason to think the children have left the state. >> we don't have sufficient evidence from fire investigators right now to positively conclude they died in this fire makes us want to make sure that they are not somewhere else. >> repo

crime and justice correspondent joe johns. so, joe, let's break this down. since this is breaking news and you know how it can go with legal decisions, they can be looked at a whole lot of different ways. this particular case, this judge had to look at not the constitutionality of voter i.d.s, he had to look at specifically whether the people of pennsylvania all had equal access to get i.d.s and get to the polls in time. and he's reversed himself from his earlier decision. where does this leave us? >> well, big picture. okay, ashleigh, it's a victory for opponents of the voter i.d. law in pennsylvania but only for this election. what the judge in pennsylvania said is that for this election only, he is blocking this controversial voter i.d. law in pennsylvania. remember, there are a lot of other states that have voter i.d. laws. the reason the judge is doing that in that state is there's not enough time, he says, between now and november to get protections in place to assure that people who want to vote don't lose their ability to vote. so the state right now is cut off from implementin

's lead has narrowed heading into tonight's big debate. john harwood is in denver getting ready for the big event. john? >> reporter: melissa, we've got several pieces of encouraging news for mitt romney from not only the wall street poll but swing states poll. you mentioned that mitt romney's closed the deficit among likely voters for obama from five points to three points. and in florida, he's closed from five down to one which is tied given the margin of error in our poll. in virginia, he has closed the gap from five to two. if you look at the state of ohio, a must-win state for mitt romney, mathematically possible for him to get to it without it but his strategists think he needs it. he needs to make progress there. but the fact that some of the national polls are coming back a little bit, some of the swing state polls are tightening, is a bit of an earn couragement for romney that he still has an opportunity for deficit with three or four points to change the dynamic in some way. he's got to hope that obama is not on his best game. you could have a scenario that like what h

john kerry called for rice to stay on. the republican party has severed ties with a virginia based consulting group it has paid $3 million to this year alone. the group is being investigated for voter fraud in nine counties in florida. right now, my story of the week. the republican bubble trap. if you follow politics, you've probably noticed that polling of the presidential election has swung quite decidedly in the president's favor over the last couple of weeks. the real clear politics polling average now has obama up 4.1 points over mitt romney in national poles. nate silver's prediction model put barack obama's odds of winning the election above 80% for the first time ever. swing state polling just this week seems to confirm the trend. a new quinnipiac "new york times" cbs poll shows surprisingly strong leads for the president. the galup tracking poll shows obama up six points. it's pretty hard to survey the polling data and not come to the conclusion that barack obama is beating mitt romney, that if the election were held today barack obama would win and that romney has a rela
